Are black clothes an obsession asks Spanish Vogue…

Friday, November 6th, 2009

(Direct translation from the Spanish edition of Vogue October 2009)

Have you ever stopped to count how many black garments are in your closet? If you answer average, 41% of the total should be black, and should have 3 pairs of black jeans, 3 shirts, 6 dresses, 6 sweaters, 12 t-shirts and skirts, 5 pairs of trousers and 12 pairs of shoes and boots. That is, at least, which concludes a study in a british newspaper whose results encouraged the English Janey Marshall to create last year, the online store dedicated only to clothes of that colour, basicallyblack. com.

As Janey Marshall said  : “Let’s face it, we do not know any woman who do not like black clothes. ” A cast of women as stylish as influential in various sectors of the fashion help us to delve into why this dark devotion. “The colour black is discreet, timeless, has class and is a safe choice, both to give a picture as classical avant-garde, ” says the Belgian designer Ann Demeulemeester.  Spanish ForAmaya Arzuaga, “its elegant, more simple than other colours and it is easier to combine. “It is the colour of the models excellence, we usually take for the casting because its stylish and its neutral “, says the top Sheila Marquez. The young director of the Fashion Museum in Antwerp, Kaat Debo, adds a key observation:  “Just look at figures like Kate Moss, the Olsen twins, Victoria Beckham, Erin Wasson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Diane Kruger and Carine Roitfeld, editor of Vogue Paris. Today, black is associated the fashionistas more than ever, perhaps because it supports better geometric silhouettes wide shoulder pad that both are carried, by rising designers such as Alexander Wang, Christophe Decarnin (Balmain) and Rick Owen  “I think that 85% of my clothing is black.  If I carry a very special dress, I like the total look, if that is easier, combined with supplements of other colour, “  says Amaya Arzuaga. Sheila Marquez estimated 70% of your closet may be black:  “There are many basics like a blazer, a cap, a minidress, a jacket biker, some boots, sports kit.  Martina Klein, the model also ensures that she receives many more flattering pictures when sh is in black:  “In principle I like more colours and prints, but I’ve learned to ignore that my first instinct because experience has shown me that black gives me more strength. In winter I wear black almost every day and in summer, I save that for the night! “

Its no wonder that almost all designers use black as their base colour season after season, like the shops. “Always offer black, because it is versatile and eternally chic. Undoubtedly it is a commercial colour. Even designers who have not submitted it on the catwalk include it relentlessly in their collections for stores, ” says Kaat Debo, who has been documenting on the subject for an exhibition opening in 2010 dedicated to black in the museum she runs.

So is it true? Are we obsessed with the colour black when it comes to our clothes?

Basically Black’s Fabulous New Autumn 09 Range

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Basically Black is very excited to share with you its new range of fashions for the autumn ’09 season. The new look can best be described in three words, crisp-modern-retro. Taking their inspiration from some of the best design ideas of fashion eras gone by, these new looks are sure to please everyone’s taste. From dresses to pants, blouses to coats, this collection is the best we’ve ever put together.

We’ve chosen four new dress designs, each with their own personality—the empire-waisted, Houndstooth Dress and an all-black High Society Knit Dress with pleated hem by Great Plains; as well as the Satin Frill Shift Dress or the Bow Back Crepe Dress by Helene Berman, reminiscent of the little black dresses worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1950’s. These dresses are appropriate for daytime or evening wear.

The crisp white shirt, a staple in any wardrobe collection, is represented this year with three beautiful designs by Luxury—the Mellanie, with blouson sleeves and a bib front; the Malinda, a classic fitted shirt with turn back cuffs; and the Mechela, a shirt top with gathered knot detail at the bust. You can pair any one of these tops with the beautifully cut new Abie Trousers by Gestuz, topping it off with the new matching Abie Suit Jacket; or match them with the ever popular pencil skirt by Basically Black, creating a traditional look that never goes out of style.

For a more casual look, Basically Black’s new range includes the black, long-sleeved City Dweller Polo and the Milkwood, a black, floral print frilly blouse by Great Plains.

The hip-hugging style of jeans is making a comeback this autumn and, paired with a wide, large buckled belt from Mac, it is the perfect look for a walk in the park or a casual evening out. The new offerings include the feminine look of either the Greenwich Jeans or Paddington Jeans styles by Soaked in Luxury; and the mid-rise Carrie Stretch Jeans or the black Stretch Cords by Mac.

To top off your monochrome wardrobe this fall, there are several new offerings of light-weight coats and jackets to suit your tastes. The Abbey Check Swing Coat offers a fun, carefree look in grey and purple plaid on a black background. This 60’s looking coat has belled sleeves and is fully lined. For a more elegant look, the stylish black cashmere Waterfall Coat by Helene Berman features a ruffled neckline and hem, and is the perfect topper for anything from a stylish little black dress and stilettos to leggings paired with the latest fashion boots.

Come check out Basically Black’s new range and see for yourself what all the buzz is about. Comfort, style and elegance at a price you can afford.

Basically Black featured in CWP Creative News

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

This month we’re talking to Janey Marshall, entrepreneur and
MD of Basically Black who bravely took the decision to
launch a new business right as the credit crunch started to
take hold. Chatting to her during the photo shoot of her new
spring/summer range, it soon became clear why this business
is so successful.
Janey, whose previous career was in national advertising, saw
an opening – or it could be described as a gaping hole – in
the market. Apart from wanting a job that fitted better round
her family, she realised the importance of the colour ‘black’ in
a woman’s wardrobe. It’s her staple colour and that of her
sister-in-law Sam (who doubles up as her model), as well as
millions of women all over the UK. So that is what she set out
to offer.
Representative of her target audience, Janey sources some of
the very best black garments available and sells them via her
website, www.basicallyblack.com, where you’ll also find
lots of useful fashion information and tips. You’ll find labels
such as Great Plains, Almost Famous and Gustuz, with prices
ranging from £12 for a simple vest top to £250 for a
designer dress.
And her other secret ingredient is the emphasis she puts on
customer service. All items arrive promptly and beautifully
wrapped, and she insists on personally answering all emails
she receives from the site. Prior to launching Basically
Black, Janey made sure she understood what her customers
wanted by creating a blog and has been actively involved in
every step of the company’s development since then.
It’s confirmed, black is the new black!
“Charlie is the best photographer I have found, he’s so
versatile, professional and always listens carefully to what I
need to achieve from each photo shoot.”
